Tooth bending strength of gears with a progressive curved path of contact

Abstract The article presents a comprehensive study on the tooth bending strength of spur gears with progressive curved path contact, or so-called S-gears. Systematic gear meshing simulations were conducted to effects S-gear geometry parameters strength. Different geometries analysed in systematically organized manner, and comparison was made against standard 20° pressure angle involute shape. Furthermore, different material combinations, e.g. polymer/polymer, steel/polymer, steel/steel, both drive driven within meaningful range loads. profile shape, combination gear, transmitted load found as main affecting stress. Complex, non-linear relations between recognized corresponding root stress observed. Based numerical results, shape factor, which considers above-mentioned effects, introduced, model for control S-gears proposed verified employing finite element method (FEM).
